Split
“He sent engineers and physicians to find him the most beautiful region on Earth” (Morgan, C., 1913)
Split is the second largest city in Croatia and one of the oldest cities in this area. It truly is a small Paradise on Earth. The historic core of Split is famous Diocletian’s Palace, built approximately 1700 years ago by the emperor himself with a purpose to have a majestic palace where he would live after his abdication. A legend says that Diocletian, after he made the decision to abdicate, sent experts to find him a perfect spot in the world where he would build a palace of an extraordinary beauty in which he would spend the rest of his life. The history had another plan for him and his palace, but that doesn’t mean that you, today, shouldn’t make Split your home away from home.
In its large and rich history, Split has developed from the Diocletian’s Palace into a small medieval town and, later on, into a big contemporary coastal city with very rich cultural life. Today, the old Diocletian’s Palace represents the historic core of the city and, together with the Historical Complex, these two form part of UNESCO World Heritage List. Here, within the walls of the palace and a little bit outside of them, you can find most of monuments and historically important buildings. However, don’t miss your chance to see other parts of the city, such as Marjan Park where you can go running or bicycling, Sustipan where you can walk in shade of tall trees and Veli Varoš, the old part of the city, where you can truly experience Split’s coastal life.
If you’re planning your visit to Split, you should definitely take a walking tour of the city and let the guide take you back in time to the Roman Empire. On the other hand, if you want to explore the city on your own, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of Domnius, People's Square and the maritime side of the city. The Meštrović gallery is ideal for all art lovers, while Split's museums will give you a true insight into the history and living in Split.
